Dr. Arielle Balbus

Clinical Psychologist

I work alongside individuals of all ages, families, and organizations to explore answers to the questions life asks us again and again: What makes life meaningful? How did we get stuck here? What reckoning and rebuilding is needed to allow for more joy, fulfillment, and freedom?

Clinical Specialties

Adolescent and young adult transitions, child and family therapy, anxiety and depression, complex and intergenerational trauma, grief and loss, pregnancy and parenting stress, identity exploration around race, gender, sexuality, neurodiversity, and spirituality.

On a high level, I was drawn to mental health because I am passionate about dismantling harmful intergenerational cycles and helping to support new ones. What that means in practice is that I get to spend my days in a cozy room, getting to know kids and adults on a deep level, and learning alongside them about where they want to go. My first hour may feature puppets navigating big feelings, my second, a family navigating a relational crisis, and my third, a young person celebrating a first love. Every workday teaches me more about the burdens we carry and the ways in which healing naturally unfolds in the presence of safety and care.

My approach to therapy is tailored to each client or family, but certain things are constant. I am attachment-based, meaning I show up to each session with curiosity, candor, and a sense of humor, building a genuine connection that can help establish new patterns in your life. I am strength-based, connecting to your own resilience and building on what is already working. I draw from insight-oriented, somatic, and behavioral modalities, offering space for reflection alongside tools to help regulate nervous systems and live in greater alignment. I am always thinking about the ways that historical and cultural forces shape us, and bring an intersectional lens that questions stale or oppressive stories and makes space for new ones.

About

Dr. Arielle Balbus (she/her/hers)

I am a licensed clinical psychologist who loves my job. Through my doctoral training at the Wright Institute, postdoctoral fellowship at UCSF Child Trauma Research Program, and predoctoral internship at California Pacific Medical Center, I developed an integrative approach that draws from psychodynamic, somatic, and mindfulness-based behavioral modalities such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I have specialized training in asylum evaluations and years of experience working with newcomer and first-generation clients. I have served as adjunct faculty at the Wright Institute, Alliant University, and CPMC, and continue to supervise graduate students and offer interdisciplinary trainings to lawyers, educators, and social service providers around trauma, child development, and cultural humility.
